Questions about route and when to go
What are the best months?
April, May, September, October and November, with mild weather and clearer skies. March, June and December are also fine. January, February, July and August are the hardest months.
When is the rainy season?
Summer, June to August, is hot, humid and rainy in most of the country. Shanghai usually gets heavy rain from mid-June to mid-July. If you go in summer, pack an umbrella and some indoor plans.
What is Golden Week?
From 1 to 7 October much of China goes travelling. Trains, hotels and sights fill up and prices rise. If you can, arrive on the 8th or later. The 1 to 5 May holiday is similar.
What about Chinese New Year?
In 2027 it falls on 6 February. Trains are packed in the weeks before, and some restaurants and shops close during the holiday. The lanterns are lovely, but for a first trip it is best avoided.
How many cities can I fit in?
Plan 2 to 4 days per city. With 10 days, Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai is the classic route. More than 5 cities in two weeks is usually too much.
Should I start in Beijing or Shanghai?
Either works. Look for flights that land in one city and leave from another, so you never backtrack. Beijing makes a good start with the big sights, and Shanghai is an easy place to finish.
