Questions about packing, health and insurance

What plugs does China use?

Types A, C and I, at 220 V. Many hotels have mixed sockets, but bring a universal adapter. Phone and laptop chargers handle 220 V. If you come from a 110 V country, check hair dryers and irons.

Can I bring my medicines?

Yes, in their original packaging, with the prescription, and only what you need for the trip. Some medicines that are legal at home are controlled in China, so check with the Chinese embassy if you take anything strong.

What are the toilets like?

Always carry tissues and hand gel. Many public toilets have no paper and quite a few are squat toilets. Hotels, malls and big stations usually have Western ones.

Can I drink the tap water?

No. Drink bottled water, which is cheap and often free in hotels. For tea in your room, use the kettle.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, with medical cover and repatriation. Healthcare is not free and can be very expensive, and hospitals usually ask foreigners to pay upfront.

What clothes should I pack?

Comfortable shoes, as you will walk a lot and climb many steps, like on the Great Wall. In spring and autumn, layers. In summer, light clothes and an umbrella. In winter, Beijing gets very cold.
